Can you guys feel it? That cool in the air, the crisp nights and the chilly mornings? Fall is coming and with it, a lot of work and preparations. Fall in New England is really the best time of year in my opinion, as it is just so lovely outdoors. While I am sure you will be quite busy with those October hikes and getting ready for the holiday season, take some time and check the list below…

Fall House Prep:

  1. Clean out your gutters.

  2. Clean outdoor furniture and equipment in preparation for storage.

  3. Check doors and windows to make sure there are no air leaks.

  4. Have your fireplace, furnace and/or heating system checked.

  5. Get ready to rake.

Fall Clothing Prep:

If you have more clothes than closet or drawer space, it’s time to pack up summer wear and unpack your fall and winter wardrobe.

  1. Cull and donate summer clothes you don’t want or need. Pack only the clothes you wore this summer. If you didn’t wear it this summer, odds are you won’t next summer either. Save the space and donate unworn items.

  2. Go through fall and winter clothes, getting rid of items you don’t want anymore.

  3. Wash and press fall and winter work clothes.

  4. Check winter coats and sweaters to make sure there are no moth holes or other tears that might prevent them from keeping you warm.

Home Prep:

The days get shorter and darker in the fall. Consider some of these tips to keep the house light while it’s dark outside.

  1. Bring nature inside. Flowers, plants, berries and leaves can add fall colors and liven up a space.

  2. Hang mirrors, which reflect light.

  3. Make sure your lights-out kit is stocked. Fall storms and winter snows can mean no electricity. Make sure your flashlights work and you have a stock of batteries.

Food and Family Prep:

  • Gather up family favorite fall recipes such as soups, stews and chilies.

  • Pumpkin spice flavor is popular in fall, but it’s not limited to your favorite coffee shop. Pumpkin is healthy and you can use it to make breads or muffins, soups and sauces, and more. You can find many healthy, tasty recipes online.

  • Plan for holidays. Whether you like it or not, Halloween items are stocked in stores and it won’t be long before Christmas decor is up. It’s a reminder to make your holiday plans, especially if you intend to travel.

Fall is the season that feels like it’s slowing down, but it picks up quickly as the holidays approach. Make sure you home and family are prepared for the new season.
